Hi and welcome to my general practice blog.

I’m a GP at Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast.  I have been working here since December 2017.  My main interests lie in sports medicine, oncology and family medicine however I enjoy all aspects of general practice.

My journey to being a general practitioner is more unusual than most.  I started off life as a Veterinarian in Sydney, doing work experience in a Feline Medicine Clinic followed by my first year at West Pennant Hills Veterinary Clinic. A move to Brisbane and completion of my medical degree at University of Queensland meant that I was able to do an elective in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea followed by an internship at Princess Alexandra.  During my first year I did rotations in General Medicine, Colorectal Surgery, Emergency, Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery.  House officer rotations followed the next year with a stint in Emergency, a rural relieving term in Roma Queensland, lower limb orthopaedics, Ear Nose and Throat, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery.   A move to Toowoomba saw a focus on Orthopaedics with a subsequent rotation at Gold Coast Hospital. Sometime around here I had time to complete a Masters of Sports Medicine and doctor for a local rugby union team.  A change in direction meant working for a period in Radiation Oncology at St Andrews in Toowoomba and then at Royal Brisbane Hospital, playing with Linear Accelerators.   Completion of my GP training was in Toowoomba and now I have moved to Mermaid Beach permanently.   Amazing how thirteen years of training can fit into one paragraph!

Currently I am seeing patients Tuesday to Friday at Mermaid Central Medical Centre.  We are also open on weekends.   I do surgical assisting so can be at your side from diagnosis of your arthritic knee, through conservative management to being at your operation and recovery!

Thanks for reading. Follow to stay up to date with various topics related to General Practice and Sports Medicine.  Disclaimer:  there will of course be the odd veer off into topics related to Zoonoses (transmission of disease from animal to human), Rugby Union and my gold coast adventures.

And yes I am still a registered veterinarian!
