Influenza Vaccines now available!
I’m a GP at Mermaid Central Medical Centre on the Gold Coast, working here since December 2017. My main interests lie in sports medicine, oncology, men’s health and family medicine however I enjoy all aspects of general practice.
As we learn more and more about human wellbeing it is becoming evident that exercise can prevent cancer, reverse later onset diabetes and treat depression. Plus it’s free.
My journey to being a general practitioner is more unusual than most. I started off life as a Veterinarian in Sydney, doing work experience in a Feline Medicine Clinic followed by my first year at West Pennant Hills Veterinary Clinic. A move to Brisbane and completion of my medical degree at University of Queensland meant that I was able to do an elective in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea.
During my internship at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, I did rotations in General Medicine, Colorectal Surgery, Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and an emergency rotation at Redlands Hospital. House officer rotations followed the next year with a stint in Emergency at QEII Hospital, a rural relieving term in Roma Hospital Queensland, and lower limb orthopaedics, Ear Nose and Throat, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery terms back at Princess Alexandra. A move to Toowoomba saw a focus on Orthopaedics with a subsequent rotation at Gold Coast Hospital. Sometime around here I had time to complete a Masters of Sports Medicine and was a doctor for a local rugby union team
A change in direction meant working for a period in Radiation Oncology at St Andrews Hospital in Toowoomba and then at Royal Brisbane Hospital, playing with Linear Accelerators. Completion of my GP training was in back Toowoomba and now I have moved to Mermaid Beach permanently.
Currently I am seeing general practice patients Monday to Friday at Mermaid Central Medical Centre.
On Thursday mornings I am with Dr Angelo Rando in his Hand Clinic at Southport focussing more on hand injuries and arthritis.
Mermaid Central Medical Clinic is open on Saturday and Sundays although my weekends are often filled by helping sporting teams with on field medical support. In 2018 I was honoured to use my sports medicine training with the following Gold Coast teams:
- Queensland Country Rugby Union
- Bond University Rugby Union
- Bond University AFL Womens and Mens Teams
- Bond Women Rugby Union Sevens
- U15 Junior Gold Cup Rugby Union
- Gold Coast Cyclones Rugby Union
I also do surgical assisting with Dr Jason Beer and Dr Angelo Rando so can be at your side from diagnosis of your arthritic joint, through conservative management to being at your operation and recovery.
Thanks for reading my blog! I regularly post new articles on topics that take my interest related to General Practice and Sports Medicine. There is also the odd veer off into topics related to zoonotic disease (transmission of disease from animal to human), sports of all kinds and my gold coast adventures.
And yes I am still a registered veterinarian!
